What is Business Intelligence?
Business intelligence allows businesses to make better decisions, by accessing data, whilst using cloud computing for data storage. In today's corporate economy, even small businesses with annual sales of less than £100,000 can benefit from business intelligence systems.
Business intelligence offers self-service dashboard building and ad-hoc reporting, and ranges from online portals to static reports, on day-to-day business data as well as on large data warehouses.
What is Power BI?
Power BI Features
Power BI offers robust, self-service, business intelligence features, giving users the ability to access & explore their data without the need of previous experience in BI or big data. Thanks to the data analytics method of the platform, a user can easily filter, sort, and visualise the information in the format of different dashboards & reports, to help user make more informed decisions. In addition, Power BI can reduce business costs and security risks, when considering that only one tool will be used for data analytics, instead of relying upon multiple solutions.
On its own, Microsoft Excel is a powerful, flexible tool, for data analysis, but when combined with a business intelligence platform such as Power BI, a user has access to even greater analytics and visualisations. In order for this to be possible, Power BI has Excel connectors that allow interactive analytics to run through existing Excel workbooks. Furthermore, to make this even easier for users, Power BI data models can also be inserted into Excel, so that PivotTables and charts can be easily created.
Simplify Data Sharing
Power BI's data sharing features allow users to reduce the time spent on giving access to different reports & dashboards to other users, both inside and outside of an organisation. When a dashboard or report is shared, all the data is available in read-only mode, allowing the user to interact with the report but not edit it. In addition, the report can't be re-shared unless otherwise specified.
Integrate with the Microsoft Power Platform
Turn data into insights, and insights into actions, using the Microsoft Power Platform. Power BI can be combined with Power Apps, a graphical software, for writing bespoke, low-code business applications, and Power Automate, for creating automated workflows. As an example, Power Apps gives you the ability to write a simple app which can collect, store, and return information; Power Automate can apply the business logic to that application and its data; and Power BI can then visualise that data.
Power BI has a mobile application for iOS and Android. This allows users to interact with reports & dashboards wherever they are stored – on-premises or in the cloud. All you need to do is create your reports in Power BI Desktop, then use the Power BI mobile app to view and engage with all the resources.
In addition to a tight Excel interaction and out-of-the-box connectors to a variety of data sources, Power BI offers users built-in AI, removing the need for employing data scientists. Instead, through the Power Query Editor, a user can access pre-trained machine learning models which enhance visualisation, interpretation, and analysis of data.

Cloud hosted data solutions
More businesses are moving their hosting to the cloud. There are many advantages and reasons for doing so, including cost reduction, data sharing, scalability, as well as security, failover and redundancy. Dolphin IT Solutions is a Microsoft Azure Partner, and as such we can help you scope out your cloud migration and hosting options, and, in many cases, get you a better deal on your cloud hosting.
Security, backups and disaster recovery
When you have a business intelligence and data hosting solution in place, the final step is to make sure it's secure and recoverable (in case of an unforeseen data loss), and has failover built in where needed, so the business can keep running in the case of an IT failure. There are many options here, but this is a vital step to ensuring your solution is robust.
